African American Hair Care Tips

Wrap hair or cover hair with a silk scarf at night. If you don’t wrap your hair at night, consider using a silk or satin pillow case. This will help reduce hair breakage due to friction, retain moisture in the hair and keep hair from getting tangled while you sleep.

If you do activities throughout the week that cause you to sweat excessively, you may need to wash your hair mid-week. Consider doing a double rinse with your favorite moisturizing conditioner, instead of using shampoo. This will help you to maintain more of the natural oils in your hair and scalp.

Oil your scalp while it is still damp. This locks the moisture into your scalp.

If you wash and roller set your hair at home, consider letting it air dry or using your hooded dryer on a low heat setting. The lower heat setting will give your curls a longer life.

Hair loses moisture quickly in colder months, use a leave-in water based hair moisturizer once per day. We recommend that you moisturize at night before you wrap your hair.
